The Blue Lagoon is the photo most people have in mind when they picture a day on the water near Split. The water really is that colour. The trick is being there when it is calm and quiet, not when forty boats are rafted together at noon.

Where it is

The Blue Lagoon sits near the islet of Budikovac, between the islands of Drvenik Veli and Drvenik Mali, west of Split. It is a shallow channel with a sandy bottom, which is what turns the water that bright, pale turquoise. There is no road to it. The only way in is by boat, which is part of why it still feels like a proper destination rather than a beach.

From Split it is around an hour on a comfortable boat, and less on a fast one.

The timing that matters

This is the whole game. The lagoon is small and it gets busy.

Leave Split at 09:00 and you will usually have the water close to yourself for the first swim. By late morning the day-tour fleet arrives and the anchorage gets loud and crowded. If you would rather a later start, the light and the calm come back in the late afternoon, after about 16:00, once the group tours have moved on.

A private boat is what gives you control of this. You pick the departure time, and a local skipper knows on any given day whether to go straight to the lagoon or swim somewhere else first and arrive after the rush.

Making a day of it

The Blue Lagoon is a stop, not a whole day. Most trips pair it with something nearby:

  • A quiet bay on Šolta, such as Maslinica, for a second swim with no one around.
  • Lunch at a konoba on Drvenik or Šolta that the crew books ahead.
  • The town of Trogir on the way back, a small walled old town that is easy to reach by water.

In the cooler shoulder months the crew often swaps the busiest spots for calmer ones like Maslinica, which at that time of year can be just as good and far emptier.

What to bring

Keep it simple: swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, and water shoes if your feet are sensitive on rocks. On a crewed day the snorkelling gear, towels and drinks are already on board, so there is little to carry.

Want a livelier day with a town and lunch on shore instead? See our day trip to Hvar from Split, the other route most people ask about.

Common questions

Where is the Blue Lagoon near Split?
The Blue Lagoon is a shallow, sheltered channel near the islet of Budikovac and the island of Drvenik Veli, west of Split. The sandy bottom and clear water give it the bright turquoise colour. It is about an hour from Split by a quick boat, less by a fast one.
How do you get to the Blue Lagoon from Split?
By boat. There is no land route. You can join a shared group tour or take a private charter from one of the Split marinas. A private boat lets you choose your departure time, which is the key to beating the crowds.
What is the best time to visit the Blue Lagoon?
