Brač is the big island you can see from Split's waterfront, and it is the easiest one to reach. There are three ways across, and they land you in very different places. Picking the right one is mostly about knowing where on Brač you actually want to be.

The car ferry to Supetar

This is the workhorse. The Jadrolinija car ferry runs from Split port to Supetar on Brač's north coast, takes about 50 minutes, and sails many times a day in high season. It is cheap for foot passengers and the only option if you are bringing a car.

The catch is where it drops you. Supetar is a pleasant town with its own beaches, but it is on the wrong side of the island for Zlatni Rat. From Supetar to Bol is roughly 40 minutes by road, over the hills, by bus, taxi or rental car. A day trip to the famous beach by ferry is realistic, but a good part of it is spent travelling.

The fast catamarans

Foot passengers have quicker options. A fast catamaran does Split to Supetar in about 20 minutes. In summer there is a direct catamaran to Bol, which takes roughly an hour and puts you within walking distance of Zlatni Rat. There is also a catamaran to Milna on the west coast, about half an hour.

These are the smartest public option if you know which town you want. They run less often than the car ferry, sell out on busy days, and the return times decide when your day ends. Check the current timetable before you plan around them, because schedules change with the season.

A private boat

A private boat does not go to a port unless you want it to. It goes to the beach.

From Split, the run to Zlatni Rat takes around 50 to 60 minutes. You anchor off the spit and swim straight off the back. From there the whole coastline is open: the quiet coves on the north coast that no ferry passes, lunch in Bol, a stop in Milna on the way home. There is no bus across the island and no last catamaran to catch.

For a couple on a budget, the catamaran is hard to beat. For a family or a group of friends, the maths changes. A private boat is priced per boat, not per seat, and split between six people it often costs less per head than they expect.

Which one to choose

Take the car ferry if you are staying on Brač for a few days and need a car, or if you simply want to reach Supetar.

Take a catamaran if you are going to one town, Bol or Milna, and are happy to work around its return time.

Take a private boat if the point is a day on the water: Zlatni Rat early before the crowds, a swim in a bay with no one else in it, lunch where you like and home in the late light.

A good Brač day by boat

Leave Split at around 08:00. Reach Zlatni Rat by 09:00, when the beach is still quiet and the light is soft. Swim and walk the spit for a couple of hours, then move to a calmer bay for late morning. Lunch in Bol. A second swim in the afternoon, and back to Split by early evening.
