A boat anchored over turquoise water at a quiet bay near Split

The best swimming around Split is not in Split. The city beaches are fine for a quick dip, but the water people picture, that pale, glowing turquoise over bright pebble, is out among the islands. Most of it is awkward to reach by land and simple to reach by boat, which is exactly why it stays good.

Here are the ones worth the trip, and how to get to them.

Zlatni Rat, the Golden Horn

The most photographed beach in Croatia is a shingle spit on Brač that changes shape with the wind. By ferry it is most of a day with a transfer at the end. By boat you anchor off the tip, swim in deep clear water on both sides, and skip the crowded land approach entirely. It is the clearest example of a beach that a boat completely transforms.

Stiniva and the wild side of Vis

Stiniva is a near-enclosed cove on Vis, reached through a narrow gap between two cliffs. Arriving by water, through the rock gateway into the hidden bay, is the whole experience. It sits far enough south that it is part of a longer island day, often alongside the 5 islands and Blue Cave route, and it earns its place on every best-beaches list in Europe.

The Blue Lagoon

The shallow, sandy-bottomed channel near Drvenik that turns the water bright turquoise is the easiest showpiece swim near Split. The trick is timing, getting there before or after the day-tour fleet. We cover exactly how in our Blue Lagoon from Split guide.

The quiet Šolta and Drvenik coves

If your idea of a perfect beach is having it to yourself, the small bays of Šolta, around Maslinica, and the coves of Drvenik are the answer. They are close to Split, rarely on the big tour routes, and at their best in the shoulder months when a short private trip can find one empty. These are the swims locals choose when the famous spots are busy.

When to go

The sea around Split warms from about 19 degrees in May to 26 or 27 in August, and stays swimmable into October. For the beaches, June and September are ideal: warm water, calmer seas, and far fewer boats anchored over the best spots. Mornings are calmer than afternoons almost everywhere, which is why the prettiest bays look their best early.

A beach day works for every kind of group, including the youngest. If you are planning one with children, our family boat day guide covers the calmest, safest bays. When you want a day built around the water rather than the timetable, tell us your dates and we will plan the swims around the light and the wind.

Common questions

How do you get to Zlatni Rat from Split?
Zlatni Rat is on the island of Brač, near Bol on the south side. By public ferry it is a slow trip with a bus or taxi at the other end, often most of a day. By private boat you go directly to the beach, anchor off the famous shingle spit, and swim straight off the back, which turns a logistical day into a couple of easy hours.
Which beaches near Split have sand?
Croatia is mostly pebble and shingle, not sand. Bačvice in Split itself is a rare shallow sandy beach. Most of the beautiful spots, like Zlatni Rat and the Blue Lagoon, are bright pebble or shingle with clear water, which is why the sea looks so blue over them. Bring water shoes if your feet are sensitive.
Can you reach Stiniva Cove without a tour?
Stiniva, on the island of Vis, is reachable on foot down a steep path or by boat through its narrow rock gateway. By water it is effortless and far more dramatic, arriving through the gap between two cliffs into the hidden bay. It is one of the stops on a longer southern day from Split.
When is the sea warm enough to swim near Split?
The Adriatic around Split runs from about 19 degrees in May to 26 or 27 degrees in August, holding warmth into September and October. June to September is comfortable swimming for almost everyone, and the shoulder months are warm without the crowds.
What are the best quiet beaches near Split?
The coves of Šolta, such as around Maslinica, and the smaller bays of Drvenik are the easiest quiet swims close to Split. They rarely appear on the big tour routes, so a short private trip can have them almost to itself, especially outside July and August.
