Every month on the Adriatic is different. The same boat and the same route will give you a different day in June than in August, and a different day again in September. Here is what the season actually looks like from the water, so you can plan around what you most want.

May: quiet and cool

May opens the season and the water is still cool, around 17 to 19 degrees Celsius. Swim stops are shorter and more bracing. The upside is significant: almost no other boats, bays to yourselves, and a clarity of light that the summer haze takes away. The weather is changeable and a trip may need to flex by a day, but if you want the islands without anyone else on them, May delivers.

June: the sweet spot starts here

By June the sea is warm enough for comfortable swimming, typically 20 to 23 degrees and rising through the month. The popular spots are busier than May but nowhere near the July peak. A private charter in June can find a quiet anchorage at the Blue Lagoon or a bay off Šolta that is genuinely calm and uncrowded. June is also when the light is long: late sunsets mean you can make a slow day of it without rushing back.

For the Blue Lagoon in particular, June is the best month. The colour is at its most vivid, and you can still arrive to a near-empty anchorage with a morning start.

July and August: full peak

The water is at its warmest, usually 25 to 27 degrees, and the sea is reliably calm. If swimming is the priority, peak summer delivers. What it also delivers is crowds. The 5 islands and Blue Cave route sees the most traffic in these months, and the famous stops are at their busiest. Group tours cluster at the same times and places.

On a private charter you have more control: you choose the bays that are not on the standard routes, you move when a spot fills, and you do not share the boat with strangers. But July and August require more creativity from the skipper, and more flexibility from you. Book well in advance and do not assume the most famous stops will be quiet.

September: the hidden favourite

September is when the crew's opinions converge. The water temperature has had the whole summer to build and is often at its peak, around 24 to 26 degrees. The school year has started in northern Europe, which empties the islands visibly. The famous bays at Stiniva, the Pakleni islands and the Blue Lagoon are calmer than at any point since May. The light softens and the colours shift.

For a sunset cruise, September is especially beautiful. The sun drops earlier, which makes evening trips more accessible, and the golden hour is longer and warmer in tone.

October: for those who know

October brings unpredictable weather and a sea that is cooling again, back toward 21 to 22 degrees by mid-month. Bays are almost entirely empty. On a calm October day the quality of the light and the solitude are unlike anything the summer months offer. A private charter in October is more about reading the conditions and less about sunscreen. For the right traveller it is the finest month on the water.

Common questions

What is the best month for a boat trip from Split?
June and September are the sweet spot for most visitors. The water is warm, the sea is typically calm, and the popular bays and islands are noticeably less crowded than in July and August. For a private charter, where you choose your own bays, the shoulder months give you the best combination of conditions and space.
Is the sea warm enough to swim from a boat in June?
Yes. By early June the sea around Split is typically between 20 and 23 degrees Celsius, which is comfortable for most swimmers. It warms through the month. By late June the water feels genuinely warm rather than bracing. September is often the warmest month of all for swimming because the surface temperature has had the whole summer to build.
How crowded are the islands in July and August?
Very. July and August are the peak of the Adriatic season, and the popular bays — the Blue Lagoon, Hvar, Stiniva — are at their busiest. Group tours stack up at the same stops. On a private charter you can find quieter spots, but the sea itself is busy. If you are set on July or August, book early and plan around the mornings.
Can you go on a boat trip from Split in May or October?
Yes, on a good day. May and October can be beautiful: calm seas, almost no crowds and a different quality of light. The water is cooler, around 17 to 19 degrees in May and dropping again in October, which puts some people off swimming. The weather is also less predictable, so a trip may need to flex or reschedule. For anyone who enjoys the peace more than the warmth, the shoulder months are genuinely special.
When does the boat season in Split run?
Commercially, roughly May through October. The peak is July and August, the shoulder months are June and September, and the quietest times are May and October when conditions allow. We run charters through the season and adjust the route to the weather whenever necessary.
